More fashion effort needed, says Nicole Richie

Nicole Richie thinks people “don’t make enough effort” with their appearance.

The socialite-turned-designer says even busy working mothers should find time for some glamour.

Nicole has two children, Harlow, two, and nine-month-old Sparrow, with her partner Joel Madden, but she makes sure motherhood doesn’t interfere with her stylish image.

“I’m a busy working mother,” she told Vogue.co.uk. “I’m all for what’s comfortable but I don’t think people today make enough effort with what they wear.”

Nicole did admit that it is harder to make time for fashion when you have children to take care of, but says mothers can do simple things to look better. She usually relies on a smart jacket from her own range to glam up an everyday outfit.

“I don’t want to have to get out of bed early to decide what to put on,” she explained. “My jackets are my favourite part of my collection because you can just throw one on over jeans and a vest and it looks like you’ve made an effort.”

Nicole launched her House of Harlow 1960 and Winter Kate autumn/winter 2010-11 collections in London on Wednesday night.

The designer revealed she gains a great deal of inspiration for her collection by people-watching, and she likes to create unexpected pieces from everyday items.

“I was walking around the other day and I saw this woman wearing this great hat and I thought actually that’d make a really good bag so we turned it upside down and now it’s a great looking bag,” she said.
